The inflammation of the gums receives the technical name of gingivitis, which is nothing more than a periodontal disease that is caused by bacteria. The idea is to prevent them from developing so that they do not affect your teeth.

Characteristics of gingivitis are irritation, swelling, redness and bleeding of the gums. This is too common and can be treated and reversed if it is managed in the first phase, thus avoiding the destruction of the bone and connective tissue that support the teeth.

The problem is when the disease is not treated in time, since it can lead to periodontitis which, if it is a serious disease that is not reversible and consists of the destruction of the supporting tissues and the destruction of the bone, which causes lose the tooth

Reasons why the gums are inflamed.

The main cause of gingivitis is the accumulation of dental plaque or tartar, which is deposited on the teeth and in the gum groove. This can be caused by poor dental hygiene, which causes food debris to remain in the mouth along with bacteria. Although there are also more reasons why you can have gingivitis:

There are certain diseases that affect the immune system, such as HIV, cancer, diabetes, among others…
Tobacco greatly increases the risk of mouth disease.
If vitamins such as C and D are lacking, as well as oral herpes, they can also cause gum inflammation.
Improper brushing that causes irritation and inflammation of the gums.
Some allergies to substances for oral use.
Pregnancy can cause sensitive gums due to changes in hormones.

Symptoms of gum disease

One of the most notable symptoms is the inflammation and irritation of the gums, together with their redness, which changes from a very dark red to violet. They also tend to bleed very easily just by brushing our teeth or using other oral hygiene products such as dental floss.

Finally, gingivitis can cause receding gums, bad breath (called halitosis) from bacteria that live in the mouth, and tooth and gum sensitivity when eating and drinking.

How can you help with swollen gums?

The best method that we use in Sermadent Clinics when they come with inflammation in the gums is to make a review of the whole mouth and a thorough exploration of the gums, teeth and the rest of the mouth.

It is important to ask about your medical history, as this could be the origin. If necessary, an x-ray of the teeth would also be done.

Once the medical results have been obtained, a treatment will be applied to each patient according to what the expert sees fit. It is also necessary to explain to the patient how to properly brush and floss. In this way we can prevent inflammation of the gums or gingivitis. In addition, thanks to oral care, we can prevent many more oral diseases.
