"We treat and care for the tissues than surround and support your teeth"
What is a periodontic treatment?
Oral health doesn´t just cover molars, canines and incisors, we also have gums and the jawbone, which are very important to maintain in a healthy state. Periodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with diagnosing, treating and maintaining these tissues that surround our teeth.
These surrounding tissues can suffer from problems and be affected by infection or inflammation. In our dental centres we know how to treat them so that you have healthy gums and avoid serious problems in the future.
Periodontal disease, also known as pyorrhea, is a chronic disease and is very frequent amongst adults. One in three people develop issues with their gums after the age of 40, and, if periodontal disease is not treated correctly it can lead to loss of teeth, as the supporting tissues that surround the teeth start to retract and the teeth begin to move.
Periodontal disease has a hereditary component, in that if one or both of your parents have the disease then you should visit your dentist at least twice a year to check that you are not developing the disease, and above all, to prevent it, with dental hygiene techniques, regular cleans and recommended toothpastes and mouthwashes.
Other causes of periodontal disease are poor hygiene and hormonal changes. Hormonal changes are very frequent in women throughout their menstrual cycle and more pronounced in pregnancy. As such, we recommend that if you are pregnant, to come for a check up in your second trimester so it can be detected and treated in time.
Even though it is a chronic disease, with the correct treatment (when it is necessary), and regular maintenance, Sermadent Dental Centre has the specialists to ensure you keep your teeth.
Make AppointmentStages of Periodontal disease
Periodontal disease can be classified into different stages depending on the severity of the situation:
- Gingivitis: In this stage the gums are slightly inflamed and red, principally caused by the presence of bacterial plaque. In this stage the gums often bleed when brushing your teeth, and with a simple hygienist clean we can restore the gums to a healthy state.
- Initial periodontitis: If the bacterial plaque and tartar continue without treatment, the gums continue to be inflamed and the bone that supports the teeth starts to recede, creating periodontal pockets. With a deeper clean the advance of the disease can be stopped, although regular maintenance is needed to ensure the disease does not become activated again.
- Moderate periodontitis: In this stage black triangles between the teeth start to appear, due to recession of the gums. The periodontal pockets are greater than 4mm deep and the teeth start to move. In these cases, it is then necessary to perform a professional treatment with root scaling and planing to avoid the disease progressing further. Although bone that has been lost cannot be regained, with proper care no more bone should be lost and the teeth can be preserved.
- Advanced periodontitis: In this stage the retraction of the gums and bone loss is very advanced and obvious, with tooth roots visible and the teeth may fall out spontaneously. The treatment that we provide in our clinic consists of a combination of root scaling and planing with surgery for the more seriously affected areas. This allows us to completely eliminate all traces of tartar and bacteria which are the cause of this disease, in the most effective way, leading to the greatest chance of a successful treatment.
Treatment step by step
At Sermadent Dental Centres we offer a comprehensive treatment for periodontal disease with a 360° perspective, to address the problem and achieve a long lasting result, when following the advice and treatments that we propose.
Step 1: diagnosis
In this first step a periodontal study is done, measuring the periodontal pockets in the gums to establish the situation, stage and aggressiveness of the disease.
In this study, we measure each tooth in 6 places, evaluating the bleeding of the surrounding gum tissue, mobility of the tooth and if there is any pus.
Along with this study we also take a series of x-rays of each tooth to see the state of the bone, to also give us a visual picture of the situation.
Step 2: Treatment
The periodontal treatment is performed with a series of ultrasonic cleaning, root scaling and planing. This root scaling and planing consists of manually eliminating the accumulation of tartar, the cause of the inflammation of the gums and loss of bone, from the roots of the teeth, using curettes. This treatment is done under local anaesthetic making it completely pain free.
At Sermadent Dental Centres we know that 75% of the success of the periodontal treatment depends on the oral hygiene of the patient. As such, our specialists do two specific revisions after the initial treatment, two weeks apart, to see if the patient is using a correct brushing technique to prevent the problem reoccurring.
If, within these two revisions, we see that the plaque index is within the safe levels for a successful treatment, we move to the final study. This study, performed in the same way as the initial study, allows us to evaluate the current state of the gums, allowing us to see the results of the treatment.
Step 3: Maintenance
In this final step, the patient is “discharged”. Depending on the severity of the situation, our experts will recommend a maintenance with clean every three months, four months, or in less severe cases every 6 months.
Eventually, and after review of the patient´s progress, the frequency of the maintenance revisions will be decreased as per the specialist’s recommendations.
